The St. John’s baseball team will have their second Big East matchup today against Seton Hall. The Johnnies suffered a 17-5 defeat Wednesday afternoon at Hofstra. They’ll look to even their Big East record to 2-2 with Sonny Fauci starting at pitcher. Game time is at 3 p.m. at Jack Kaiser Stadium in Queens, NY.

Last week, UConn won two of three games in a series at St. John’s. The Johnnies are 88-74 all-time against Seton Hall. Despite the history, head coach Mike Hampton plans to prioritize focus on St. John’s game versus Seton Hall’s.

“Seton Hall is definitely a different team than UConn. Both teams have team speed. Seton Hall is a little bit more of a bunting team and kind of a scrappy team where UConn is pretty good and they can drive the baseball and also run. At the end of the day, we have to worry about what St. John’s is doing. I’m more concerned on the way that we play the game and the things that we do rather than the other team.”

Today’s game will be St. John’s fourth of their 22 Big East games. Scoring has been the Johnnies’ strong suit while defense has been killing them. Redshirt junior and left fielder, Paul Orbon, has had one start and one pinch-hitting appearance in the last three games despite having a .313 batting average. He hopes to have more playing time in the upcoming Seton Hall series.

“[Seton Hall] has definitely been a rival for us and for a long time historically. It’s a team that no matter how each team is doing every year it’s always a big series. We bring our best and they bring their best so we have to be ready for it.”
